Healthy Anger Programs for Men and Women

About Anger

About Healthy Anger:

All people experience anger in their lives. Some of it is appropriate and healthy. Healthy anger is a reflection of irritation or frustration which can motivate us to communicate better and make positive changes in our lives.

About Unhealthy Anger:

Unhealthy anger also begins when we feel frustrated, but then grows into destructive anger which we take out on ourselves, at work or against those we care about. Many of us react without thinking of what the consequences may be to ourselves or others.

Some symptoms to watch for are: headaches, stomach aches, skin rashes and nervousness. It can also express itself in road rage, yelling, sarcasm, or “put-downs”, and can sometimes reach the point of neglect, hitting, or slapping. In extreme cases it can lead to physical or emotional abuse and assault.

As with second hand smoke, people exposed to others who have anger management problems are also more stressed, unhappy and at risk for relationship-related problems both in their personal lives and at work.

Healthy Anger Programs

Group and Individual Programs:

The programs are designed for both women and men who have difficulty managing unhealthy anger, are committed to change, and want to do something about it. Individual sessions are almost always available; group sessions are available on an “as needed” basis.

Goal:

The goal of the programs is to provide participants with increased self awareness and healthy anger management skills.

Program Leaders:

Sharyn Chapman, R.N., CPMHN(C),
Nurse

Terry McLaughlin, B.Sc.O.T,
Occupational Therapist

Sharyn and Terry are mental health professionals who are experienced teachers of anger management. They are registered professionals with their health professions (Nursing and Occupational Therapy) and are also approved by the Department of Community Services to provide assessment and counselling services.

All Dr. John Swaine and Associates staff are screened by the police and the child abuse registry for criminal or abusive backgrounds.

What Will You Learn?

Process:

These individual or group sessions will help you recognize what causes your frustration in situations and teaches coping skills needed to deal with these feelings before they escalate and get out of control.

We help men and women become aware of what anger is.

We define the differences between healthy and unhealthy anger, aggression, hostility and violence.

We provide the tools to promote thinking before reacting thus enabling you to chose healthier, more constructive responses.

We teach specific tools such as:

  • communications skills
  • self-talk
  • listening skills
  • relaxation techniques
  • problem-solving
  • thought-stopping
  • assertiveness
  • self-esteem
  • stress management
  • forgiveness

What to Expect

Outcomes:

By the end of the program - whether group or individual - participants will have increased their self-knowledge and healthy anger expression skills so that they can improve their thinking and behaviour. It will be possible for participants to make better choices which will improve their personal and working relationships. Most participants will notice an improvement in the way they cope with stress and anger.

These programs are most effective when individuals practice the tools they learn on a daily basis.
